Birds Avant-garde

Symposium international d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec, Canada, 2016

Birds Avant-garde includes a series of three collages (56 x 76 cm) on polyester sheet and watercolour paper using illustrations taken from old guides to field identification of North American birds. The project also includes an artist’s book, printed on cotton paper (19 x 13 x 2 cm folded and 110 x 13 x 2 cm unfolded).

Birds Avant-garde focuses on the migratory birds at the forefront of changes that are already unfolding. The bird species that criss-cross North America from South to North and East to West, passing through Quebec, are affected by the transformation of their habitat. Inspired by the protocols used by biologists who conduct bird surveys, the artist’s book Birds Avant-garde. The Survey: Snow Goose gathers a series of photographs taken in Beauport Bay, Quebec City, a site that migratory birds now use on their way to their breeding and wintering territories.
